Le Bailliage

Monument, Classic, Fortified structure, History in Aire-sur-la-Lys
  • Thanks to its central position on the town's market square, the Bailliage is home to the Tourist Information Centre and an Art & Culture gallery. But it's also the place to be for any ceremony, festival or procession!

The Bailliage was built as a guardhouse for the town's bourgeois militia. It was inaugurated in 1600. As well as being a meeting place for the garrison, the building also housed the magistracy of the bailiffs. It is from this magistracy that the monument takes its name today.
Comprising a gallery-promenade lined with eight monolithic columns perched on high pedestals, it is the heir to Flemish medieval architecture.
Finally, discover the first floor with its large mullioned and transomed windows and sculpted decoration. The main decorative motifs and themes of the Bailliage are largely inspired by the Italian Renaissance. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1886, the Bailliage has undergone a number of restorations, the most recent in 2015.
The first floor of the Bailliage is occasionally used for temporary exhibitions.
